What will you design?

There's much to see here! Take your time, look around, and learn all there is to know about Cape House Snakes in herpetoculture! By combining morphs, locality and polygenetic traits the possibilities are endless!

CAPE HOUSE SNAKE MORPHS

There are five proven base morphs in house snakes which originated in the Boaedon capensis species. All of the base morphs are recessive. Morphs of other species of house snake have been found, but are not yet proven or established.

T+ Albino

The T+ Albino (Tyrosinase-Positive) morph is a variety of albino generally exhibits darker pigments of yellow and orange. The pupil of the eye is notably black.

There is more than one line of T+ Albino and they have been proven to be incompatible.

T- Albino

The T- Albino (Tyrosinase-Negative) morph is the typical albino which has no dark pigment and is generally yellow, orange and white. Their pupils are red.

Hypomelanistic

The Hypomelanistic morph displays the typical "ghost" like appearance of dilute colouration.  They range from dilute brown to a beautiful purplish grey.

Blue Eye

The Blue-Eye  morph was originally referred to as "blue-eyed leucistic" as the adults appearance is similar to other leucistic mutations that we see in  colubrids. However, even as adults they never go a pure white colour. This morph also has a muted pattern.

Marble

The Marble morph is the newest morph to be proved genetic. This morph had a diluted grey-brown colourtion. The head pattern is the most notable attribute of this morph which is very broken up and thus gives it a marbled appearance.

CAPE HOUSE SNAKE LOCALITY & POLYGENETIC TRAITS

Cape House Snake color and pattern are variable and may be influenced by their locality and polygentic traits. Color can vary from deep brick red to chocolatey brown and patterns can vary from stripes to zigzags and even form a beautiful lace-like look. There are many locality and polygentic traits being line bred.

KZN Red

The KZN Red locality line has been developed from specimens  collected in an area of northern  Kwazulu-Natal where the soil is very red.

Patternless

The are numerous areas in South Africa where the Patternless variety of house snake can be found. The Bushveld Reptiles line are from our home area of Bela Bela. Their coloration is a rich chocolatey brown.

Striped

The polymorphic trait for striping can be found in numerous areas of South Africa. The Bushveld Reptiiles line are from the costal area of the  Southern most area of Kwazulu-Natal. This locality gets very large and has distinctive striping pattern down its dorsum.

DESIGNER HOUSE SNAKES

Many of the most impressive colors and patterns of house snakes have been elevated to the next level by combining morphs, localities and polygentic traits. The possibilities for designer house snakes seems endless!

T+ Butter

The T+ Butter is the T+ Albino morph bred into a Green locality. The result of this combination is stunning yellow colouration with little to nopattern.

This designer morph was produced for the first time in 2010  by Deon Nell.

T- Butter

The T+ Butter is the T+ Albino morph bred into a Green locality. The result of this combination is stunning yellow colouration with little to no pattern. There is variability in the T- Butter where some hatchlings are more orange and some are more yellow.

This designer morph was produced for the first time in 2012 by Rolf Dennison of Ultimate Exotics.

Hypo Green

The Hypo Green is the Hypomelanistic morph bred into a Green locality. The result of this combination is beautiful dilute green colouration with little to no pattern.

This designer morph was produced for the first time in 2013 by Rolf Dennison of Ultimate Exotics.

Hypo T+ Butter

The Hypo T+ Butter House Snake is the Hypomelanistic and T+ Albino morph bred into a Green locality. The result of this combiantion is a very dilute T+ Butter house snake with almost no pattern.

This designer morph was produced for the first time in 2016 by Rolf Dennison of Ultimate Exotics.

KZN T+ Albino

The  KZN Red T+ Albino is the T+ Albino morph bred into KZN Red locality. The result is a beautifully saturated red which gets better with age. These are pure B. capensis.

This designer morph was produced for the first time by Tyrone Ping.

Bushveld Reptiles  lines are a minimum of 50% KZN Red locality. We are now working on a line of 75% KZN Red T+ Albino.

KZN T- Albino

The  KZN Red T- Albino is the T- Albino morph bred into KZN Red locality. The result is a beautifully saturated orange which gets better with age. These are pure B. capensis.

This designer morph was produced for the first time by Tyrone Ping.

Bushveld Reptiles lines are a minimum of 50% KZN Red locality. We are now working on a line of 75% KZN Red T+ Albino.

T+/T- Sunglow (Hybino)

The T+/T- Sunglow is a double recessive visual morph of Albino and Hypomelanstic. These are pure B. capensis.

T- Albino Blue Eye

The T- Albino Blue Eye is a double recessive visual morph  of  T-Albino and  Blue-Eye.

This designer morph was produced for the first time in 2016 by John Chinn of Ditalo Reptiles.

Hypo Blue Eye

The Hypo Blue Eye is a double recessive visual morph  of  Hypo and  Blue-Eye.

We are developing standards for some of the designer morphs to ensure consistency and integrity in our product.
