While the exact number of species of house snakes in Africa is up for debate, many of them have been established in captivity. Certain species of African House Snakes require specialized husbandry so aren't often kept in captivity. Below you will find the most common species found in herpetoculture and as our knowledge grows more will be established.
The Cape House Snake (Boaedon capensis) found in Southern African. Their colouration can range from dark chocolatey brown to brick red depending on their locality. In the last 10 years, herpers in South Africa have found numerous morphs in this species increasing its popularity in herpetoculture.
The Aurora House Snake (Lamprophis aurora) is a species of house snake endemic to Southern Africa. They are a shyer species which require special care for them to do well in captivity. They are easily identified by their olive green colouration with an orange stripe that starts between their eyes and runs down along their dorsum to the tip of their tail.
The Spotted House Snake (Lamprophis guttatus) is a species of house snake endemic to Southern Africa. They are habitat specialists which make them more difficult to keep in captivity. They occurring in rocky areas, often hiding under exfoliating rock flakes or between narrow crevices. They are nocturnal and hunt for crevice-living lizards.
The Bug-Eyed House Snake (Boaedon mentalis) These large eyed beauties can be a little tricky as babies and so are best suited to a more experienced keeper.
The Striped House Snake (Boaedon lineatus) is found from Tanzanian through Central Africa. The species acquired its name due to the thick, creamy white stripes which extend from behind the eye laterally along the length of the body. This species is notably smaller.
The Black House Snake (Boaedon fuiginosus) has a wide range in sub=Saharan Africa. They are black and patternless with a gorgeous iridescence.
The Red House Snake (Boaedon fuiginosus) is a variety of fuliginosus that is found in Kenya. They are brick red and patternless.
The Green House Snake (Boaedon fuliginosus and ferdei) can refer to two species based on the locality of the original stock. They are patternless and come in a variety of olive greens.
The Olive House Snake (Lycodonomorphus inornatus) has been reclassified into water snakes.
